Macaronis Resort

Information

January 30 - CFK, an NGO based in Sikakap offers medical services to Macaronis Resort!!

If ever in need of urgent medical assistance, just around the corner in Sikakap is CFK home base in Mentawai, where Karen, an American GP has her own small medical clinik to assist those in need if a medical emergency arises. I met Lynnette Johnson, one of the Directors of CFK, over a Bintang or 3 travelling to Sikakap on the Ambu Ambu Ferry just recently, and Lynette offered that if any of our guests ever need medical assistance, CFK can help offering a qualified American doctor, perhaps in exchange for a donation to assist in their humanitarian efforts.

We also discussed ways in which Macaronis Resort and CFK could work together to assist in benefiting Silabu and surrounding villages of North Pagai, creating a more sustainable economy for the people in this region, and we intend to have a closer look at this in the not too distant future.

Even after the tsunami of 2010, these guys are still here, and the Directors have recently decided to extended their stay for another 2 years in Sikakap. So we remain hopeful that plenty of good work will come from their efforts in this region over the next couple of years.

If you would like to check out CFK website, and perhaps even request to make a donation, please visit www.cfk-indonesia.org

December 13 - Surf Simply Coaching Camp - A Surf School for Intermediate and Advanced Surfers!!

We are pleased to announce that a surf coaching program for surfers is coming to the Mentawais May 08 - May 16, year 2012.

Have you ever wondered how you could improve your cutbacks? Or what's stopping you throwing spray like a pro? Well to kick off the 2012 season, we're stoked to be welcoming the guys from Surf Simply in Costa Rica, who are offering a week of professional surf coaching at the newly refurbished Macaronis Resort.

The team at Surf Simply have spent the last few years working on re-writing the book on surf instruction, using an emphasis on bio-mechanics and video analysis to teach entry level and intermediate level surfers with the same methodology they've used to coach competitors. Most surfers tend to avoid surf schools like the plague, but when did you last hear a golfer say "I don't need any coaching, I already play golf." Surfers say it all the time, because previously there's just been lessons for beginners and coaching for pros, and that's it.

This week of coaching with Surf Simply in the Mentawais is a surf school program for the intermediate and advanced surfers (and it's about time). Between May 8th and May 17th the resort will be hosting a week of structured, hi-level coaching on the perfect waves we have on offer here. Twice a day, you'll be hitting the water with your coach in the line-up to keep you focused on the task in hand, and each session recorded on video for detailed analysis once you're back at the camp.

During the rest of the day, all the luxuries of the resort will be at your disposal, including our fleet of boats, should you want to grab another session.

For more information check out the blog ( http://www.surfsimply.com/blog/) or look for their podcasts on Itunes(http://www.surfsimply.com/podcast/).

For questions or to book in with the group, contact kerianne@surfsimply.com

December 09 - Surf Air's latest update....

We just received these photos from Wayne Clack the Director of Surf Air who has been busy preparing the aircraft for departure to Indonesia later this month. Note that the aircraft (DHC Twin Otter) is still currently in standard configuration, and amphibian floats are being assembled upon arrival to Indonesia (this is also to prevent drag on the ferry flight from USA).

According to Wayne, "the departure date to Indonesia is on 28.12.11 scheduled to arrive 07.01.12. Actually the aircraft will be ready 15 December, but due to Christmas the ferry pilot is unavailable to fly until the 28th of December. We are still looking good for commencement of flights to Mentawai March 2012 ".

Above: Surf Air is operated in affiliation with Aviastar, which is certified to operate this type of aircraft in Indonesia.

Above: Mid-zone shot, great paint job Wayne...

Above: Side shot.

Standby for future photos in the new year, with amphibian floats assembled.

Humanitarian Project - Tumalea Village (nearby 'Bat Cave' wave)

Thanks to our donors at the Tasmanian fundraser and to those who donated online to raise A$42,132 to assist Macaronis Resort and surrounding villages affected by the October 25 tsunami, Macaronis Resort has been able to assist Tumalea Village which had received little assistance in getting back on their feet...

We surveyed the villages located to the south, many have been wiped out completely like Tumalea, and have been relocated inland with new schools, medical centers and houses built by NGO's and the Indonesian Government.

Tumalea Village however, is located remotely to the north of Macaronis, only 2 people died as a result of the October 25 tsunami, but the whole village was wiped out with no houses left, and the whole village over the past 12 months have been attempting to rebuild their houses 3-4 km inland, located up a winding river, also located far from the coast which will dramatically affect their lifestyle of living off the ocean.

All boats in the village were destroyed by the tsunami, and we have found to date, that the locals have only managed to errect frame work for their new houses (47 family houses in total), and still they must walk 3-4 hours to get to the nearest rough track that is accessible by a motorbike, and where one can catch a lift of 3-4 hours to the nearest port town of Sikakap. The economy in the village is virtually dead, there are no shops at all, and the village has been basically surviving off the jungle, with a 4-6 weekly drop of rice from the local government.

On behalf of our donors, Macaronis Resort has donated a new communal long boat for the village powered by a 15hp Yamaha outboard engine (already in the village). The new longboat will alow the village to have much more simplified access to Sikakap port, bringing in supplies and allowing the village to commence trading once again.

Above: Handing over of the communal longboat to Tumalea Village, funded by donors after the tsunami.

In addition, we had planned to put money toward timber cladding for all houses that were only timber frames with either cast iron or thatched roofing to keep the rain out. However, Mercy Corps has now taken on the job of assisting the villagers in cladding their houses, therefore Macaronis Resort has instead put money toward a new 15 KVA generator (already in the village), and wiring up all the houses, with two light bulbs and a power point for each of the 47 houses. In addition, at the request of the village chief, we have also supplyied a large TV for communal viewing with a Sat TV dish, allowing the village to regain contact with the outside world.

In addition we have employed Tumalae Village to supply Bamboo for contruction of our bamboo fence which will surround the perimeter of the newly built resort.

Please click to view the Final Breakdown of how donations have been used.

Above: Signing of agreement with Tumalea Village, detailing where over AUD 10,000 in donors money would be spent to assist the village community. Locking hands, Right the Kepala Dusun (village chief), left Yon Mardjono Director Macaronis Resort, and center Mark Loughran President Director Macaronis Resort.

And below are some 'before' shots of some of the buildings in Tumalea before... standby for future photos.

Above: A meeting with the main Silabu Village (unaffected by the tsunami) to request collection of our lost belongings after the tsunami collected by the villagers, and to announce assistance being provided to Tumalea, the northern most sub-district of Silabu.

Above: A new beginning...One of many, 47 in total, half built houses in Tumalea.

Above: The main street... no shops, no where to go really, just self reliance.

Above: Make shift house.

Above: The tarps have proven pretty handy in these parts...

Above: The local church, can you imagine how hot it is in there....

Above: Church interior..

Above: The local primary school, freshly built.

We would like to make a special word of thanks to our sponsors, and those that helped out on the day of the Tasmanian fundraiser event to assist Macaronis Resort and those affected by the October 25 Tsunami in year 2010.

Here is $50 to help out ... $30 more than to anchor there when I surfed there in 2006 ... Carrick elected not to stop because of the anchor fee to the locals? I was bummed because of it ... Bruce and Andy were there, and I was thinking about that today with Andy's passing ... then came across the story of the damage you suffered. Sounds like the resort was a lifeline for those who needed it the most. God bless you and this donation. Aloha, Joe from Okinawa
